A new trade group has been launched to represent companies that manufacture and sell diamonds grown in a lab.
The International Grown Diamond Association will promote grown diamonds as "a new choice in diamonds "and educate the public about various qualities and applications of the gems, according to a news release. Ten companies seeking to expand the industry founded the association.
"With IGDA, the grown diamond industry can effectively take the collective steps to present itself to consumers who wish to have a genuine choice in diamonds, commercial sectors who require high quality but a consistent supply to develop diamond-based applications, and the larger diamond processing industry, in general," said Richard Gerard, secretary general of the new group and CEO of equipment manufacturer Microwave Enterprises.
Lab-grown diamonds are sold as jewelry but currently don't have the appeal of their more expensive mined counterparts. They are also used in industrial and scientific equipment.
The nonprofit association, currently without staff, will be based in Morrisville, N.C., offices of Microwave Enterprises, according to jewelry industry magazine JCK. http://bit.ly/1PFsBC4
